A youthful work by Michelangelo Buonarroti, the David was made between 1501 and 1504 using a piece of marble already hewn and ruined by two sculptors who had given up on the job. The novice sculptor accepted the challenge and eventually revealed his genius by immortalizing the biblical hero naked in the moment before the launch of the bullet from the sling. The colossus nand its base exceed 5 meters in height. Initially placed in front of Palazzo Vecchio, the David immediately became the emblem of the freedom of the Florentine Republic against tyranny.
